Welcome to my personal research website

If you happened to string together a bunch of letters for a URL (Shakespearian-monkeys-on-a-typewriter style), my name is Barclay Jumet. I am a PhD student at Rice University (Houston, TX) researching in the Preston Innovation Laboratory, advised by Prof. Dan Preston.

My current research pursuits regard textile materials and turning them into functional wearables with special interests in the employment of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. That is to say, I like to work on garments that do “things” but still look like normal pieces of clothing. We often achieve this by using air-based and heat-based (rather than electricity-based) systems, such that the “active clothing” is washable, durable, and can withstand the wear and tear of our hectic day-to-day lives.

Past research has included work on infinitely variable transmissions, passive rehabilitation machines, inertial measurement units in wearables, and optical tracking systems for surgery. But, you’ll forgive me for working with rigid systems, right?
